Fan Throws a Golf Ball At McIlroy, Fowler On The Tee at Wells Fargo

By Robby Kalland

Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler had a strange day on the golf course on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Championship. The two were grouped together along with Hideki Matsuyama in the morning's featured group and both played up-and-down rounds, with McIlroy posting a 1-over 73 and Fowler posting a 1-under 71.

The strangest moment came on the 6th tee when, after McIlroy nearly holed his tee shot, a fan in a flourescent green hat threw a golf ball with an earplug attached to it at the group as Fowler was teeing up.

Fowler looked up confused and the fan shouted "it's a gift!" and had a brief back-and-forth with Rickie, who wasn't too pleased with the gesture.

As the police officers accompanying the group walked over to the fan he continued to say somewhat incoherent things about Waste Management and landfills before being escorted off the course so Fowler and Matsuyama could tee off.

McIlroy and Fowler talked about the "weird" incident after the round, with both shrugging it off as just a weird thing that happened.
